Thanks Don for the posting. I have been in recovery from childhood trauma for about 6 years now and really struggle with the issues of “self-care.” There is so much information “out there” that promotes “non-self-care” if one is a Christian. Your words are very encouraging and healing. I am going to post on my wall for myself and my clients to see “I can give out of abundance but not out of need.”

Thanks!! I am home now in the bed getting some much needed rest. This article showed me how important it is to take care of your self. I realize that God does not expect nor does he ask me to take on all the burdens of the world. Jesus took time for himself—and so will I.

I have been plagued by the feeling that my desire to take care of myself was right, and yet thinking that the Bible said otherwise, so I must be a terribly rebellious, selfish person! Thank you for this article, and especially for pointing out the ministry of Jesus and the REAL meaning of dying to our “old self.”

Thankyou for sharing. I have been called to ministry. I’ve found myself lately asking the Lord how I can possibly speak into other’s lives when I’m exhausted and feeling completely burnt. I’m always giving, listening, comforting and encouraging others and usually feel resentful at the end of the day when I am reminded that I have no one that will do the same for me. It’s frustrating. Your story is encouraging. I will be setting and enforcing some self care boundaries and including the language in my relations with others.

Thank you so much for publishing this article. As others have said, it has helped me a great deal. I’m just realizing after 3 failed marriages that I have characteristics of codependency. I’ve also realized that codependency draws Narcissists, which all of my marriages have involved men who either showed signs of Narcissim or who were full blown Narcissists.

Your examples have brought out some clear principles for me to work on.

I have learned more about codependency from the Biblical point-of-view reading this article than from the many books (other than the Bible) I have read seeking help with difficult relationships.
